The important part is not which you have. It’s whether whoever cuts it treats the wall above the opening as a load that has to go somewhere.

Why the Wall Type Matters

A basement wall is holding back soil, and it’s carrying the house above it. Cutting a hole roughly three feet wide into it removes a section of both functions, and the load that section was carrying has to be redirected around the new opening.

Poured concrete behaves as one continuous element. It has tensile strength from its reinforcement and it can bridge modest spans on its own. When you cut a clean opening in a poured wall, the surrounding concrete tends to redistribute load reasonably well, and a properly sized header above the opening handles the rest. The cut edges stay where you put them.

Concrete block is a stack of individual masonry units held together by mortar. Its strength in compression is good; its ability to span an opening on its own is essentially zero. Remove a few courses and everything above them has nothing to sit on unless a lintel is installed to carry that load across the opening to the block on either side.

That’s the whole difference in practice. In a block wall, the lintel is not a detail. It is the reason the wall above the window stays where it is.

What a Proper Block Cut Involves

Assessing the wall first. Block condition, mortar joint condition, whether cores are grouted, whether there’s existing reinforcement, and whether the wall shows any pre-existing movement. A wall that’s already bowing or cracking is a different conversation before anyone talks about cutting it.

Sizing and installing a lintel. A steel angle or precast lintel spans the opening and bears on sound block at both ends, with adequate bearing length on each side. This is engineering, not eyeballing, and it should be part of the permitted plan.

Cutting cleanly. Block is cut course by course rather than as one removed slab, and clean cuts matter because ragged edges leave units without full bearing.

Handling grouted cores and rebar. Some block walls have grouted, reinforced cores. Hitting one is normal and manageable, but it changes the cut.

Sealing and flashing. Block is more porous than poured concrete and the cut edges expose cores. Waterproofing the opening properly is what keeps you from chasing a leak later.

What a Poured Cut Involves

Simpler, but not trivial.

Rebar. Poured walls contain reinforcement, and the saw will find it. Cutting rebar is expected; what matters is that the opening is sized and located so that severing reinforcement doesn’t compromise the wall, and that the header above is designed for the actual load.

Wall thickness. Thicker walls are slower cutting and heavier sections to remove, which affects time more than method.

Removing the section. A cut section of poured wall is heavy. Getting it out of the hole safely requires equipment and planning, and it’s one reason the exterior excavation gets done first.

Clean, square edges. A well-cut poured opening gives the window a true frame to seat into, which makes the seal easier and better.

Which One Does Your Lincoln Home Have?

Older homes, particularly in Lincoln’s established neighborhoods, are frequently concrete block. Look at an unfinished section of basement wall: if you can see a grid of rectangular units with mortar joints between them, that’s block. Painted block still shows the joint pattern under the paint.

Newer construction is usually poured. A poured wall reads as one continuous surface, often with faint horizontal form lines and occasional tie holes in a regular pattern.

If the basement is finished and you can’t see the wall, check the utility room, behind the water heater, or inside a crawl space. Failing that, the exterior above grade often reveals the material at the top of the foundation.
